MFA Graphic Design

MFA Program in Graphic Design

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

In the tradition of its much-admired graduate programs in other fields of artistic practice, VCFA has created an MFA in Graphic Design that requires only one week of campus residence for each six-month semester and matches each student with a gifted faculty mentor for one-on-one independent study.  One of the first of its kind in the country, the program is now accepting applications for the April 2012 residency.

VCFA's MFA in Graphic Design invites design professionals to reinvent their lives in design. Working closely with faculty who are leading practitioners in the field, students merge practice with design theory and research to expand their fluency in visual culture. They address complex questions arising from their work and engage the emerging, interactive technologies they need to participate in an ever-expanding market. The program’s low-residency, self-designed study model immerses students in a community of working designers and artists, allowing them to deepen their design knowledge and enhance their performance while remaining engaged in their own lives.

WHAT'S INVOLVED

  • 60 credits earned over the course of two years
  • Four semesters of self-designed study
  • Five week-long residencies:  one at the beginning of each semester and a culminating graduation residency

PURPOSE

The MFA in Graphic Design is a terminal degree, allowing graduates to teach at the university level. It is also a compelling credential for graphic design hiring and career advancement.

The time devoted to MFA studies helps designers clarify their vision and voice. As they synthesize research and practice, they exercise their critical thinking and refine their point of view, bringing new energy to their work.  VCFA’s flexible, low-residency model provides students with the theoretical and practical knowledge they need to deepen their design thinking, while its supportive community empowers them to imagine new approaches and exercise new ideas.
